How to treat sleep disorders and sleep apnea

Sleep apnoea is a condition that can be classified in various ways and is, in most cases, caused by the repeated closure of the throat or upper airways.

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder in which breathing stops for a period long enough to disrupt the quality of sleep and, as a result, tends to reduce the amount of oxygen and increase the level of carbon dioxide in the blood. It is a condition that can be classified in various ways and is, in most cases, caused by repeated blockages of the throat or upper airways. The upper airways include the passage leading from the mouth and nostrils to the throat and down to the vocal cords; with breathing movements, these structures can change position, creating phases that are harmful to our body.

Generally, the cause of this condition can be found in various psychological, physical and medical conditions. Among the most common are:

  • Alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking: two factors that contribute to airway obstruction, leading to the onset of the condition;
  • Family history: if one or more members of your family suffer from sleep apnoea, your likelihood of developing the condition increases significantly;
  • Nasal congestion: individuals whose ability to breathe through the nose is reduced due to congestion are more likely to suffer from sleep apnea;
  • Anatomical features: the size and positioning of the neck, jaw, tongue, tonsils and other tissues near the back of the throat can directly affect airflow, contributing to sleep apnoea;
  • Weight: this is a common cause of sleep apnea in adults; indeed, it leads to an increase in fat deposits in the neck, which can block the upper airways.

Many studies have shown that sleeping on one’s side is one of the simplest and most effective remedies, particularly when the condition is mild or moderate: this is known as positional therapy for obstructive sleep apnea. Positional therapy involves learning to change the habit of sleeping on one’s back (on one’s stomach) or on one’s stomach (face down). There are various types of measures, ranging from mild to more invasive, which help to manage this condition.

Particular importance must also be given to the aspect of personal awareness. You should not feel any hesitation or shame if you suffer from this disorder. As explained, it is largely treatable, but it is necessary to consider multiple factors, which must not be overlooked in any way. The key is to seek medical support where necessary, which is useful in determining the most effective treatment.

To help you resolve this type of issue, Swiss Dental Clinic can offer further assistance through SomTabs, the mandibular advancement system that helps clear the air passage at the pharynx, preventing apnea and snoring.
