Dental caries and nutrition: which foods are the most harmful?
Diet has a significant impact on our oral hygiene, and although we may have a sweet tooth, certain foods should be avoided as much as possible. Let’s take a look at the 5 foods to avoid to prevent tooth decay.
Sugars. This certainly comes as no surprise: foods and drinks high in sugar are very harmful to our teeth. Packaged snacks, sweets and chocolate, especially when eaten between meals when we won’t be able to brush our teeth for several hours.
Fizzy drinks. These contain a large amount of sugar, causing premature enamel erosion in those who consume them in excess.
Citrus fruits. You didn’t expect that one, did you? Although rich in vitamins, citrus fruits also contain citric acid, which is abrasive to tooth enamel. Of course, we would never dream of advising you not to eat them: simply drink some water or rinse your mouth after eating them and wait 30 minutes before brushing your teeth.
Pasta, bread and similar foods. Baked goods made with highly refined, industrial flours tend to promote the build-up of plaque on the teeth. Opt for wholemeal and less processed foods.
Alcohol. As well as being harmful to your health, alcohol also damages your teeth and gums. Consuming alcoholic drinks actually slows down salivation, which helps regulate the bacteria in your mouth. Here too, moderate consumption followed by proper oral hygiene is the best solution.
