Tooth sensitivity: causes and remedies
Everything you need to know about tooth sensitivity
Many of us suffer from tooth sensitivity, a condition caused by the nerve endings beneath the enamel and at the base of the gums becoming exposed and more vulnerable to stimulation from external factors, such as food, drink and sudden changes in temperature. The most common symptom of this problem is pain felt when eating or drinking something too hot or cold, or when brushing your teeth with a toothbrush that is too stiff.
What are the main causes and their remedies?
Bruxism, enamel wear, gum recession and a weakened immune system are some of the main causes of tooth sensitivity.
As for remedies, start by using a toothpaste specifically designed for sensitive teeth – preferably one containing potassium nitrate – and a soft-bristled toothbrush, which will not damage the enamel or overly sensitive gums; in cases of bruxism, we treat this condition immediately using a mouthguard, a device specifically designed for such problems; we support the immune system (especially in winter) with dietary supplements and a balanced diet; we consume foods rich in calcium and fluoride to strengthen the teeth.
If none of these remedies help, please contact our practice: together we will find the right treatment to tackle this problem.
